The internet is full of dog advice. Some of it is good, but a lot of it is dangerous fluff written by people who have never managed a reactive dog or soothed a puppy with separation anxiety at 2:00 AM.

We are not content writers; we are dog handlers.

Vekaan is the digital extension of our real-world life. We are Idan and Andy, the founders of Hundemotel Ludwig, a boutique dog boarding facility in Berlin, Germany. Since 2018 we have lived and breathed dog behavior, managing many guests, diverse temperaments, and complex medical needs.

We built Vekaan to answer the questions we hear every single day at drop-off—not with “theory,” but with proven, battle-tested solutions.

The Story of “Vekaan”

People often ask us where the name comes from. It was born from a desire to cut through the noise of the pet industry.

The name Vekaan is a fusion of two concepts that define our philosophy:

  1. “Ve” — From the Latin Veritas (Truth) and Responsibility (Verantwortung). It represents our commitment to honest, ethical care—even when the truth (like “your dog needs a crate”) is hard to hear.
  2. “Kaan” — A phonetic nod to Canis (Canine) and Khan (Guardian). It symbolizes the dog itself, whom we are sworn to protect and understand.

Vekaan means “True Dog Knowledge.” It is a promise that everything you read here has worked on a real dog, in a real facility, under professional supervision.

Why We Started This Site

We run a successful, boutique boarding service in Berlin with a limited number of spots. We focus on quality over quantity, treating every guest like family. But there was a problem: We could only help the dogs that fit in our building.

We saw the same preventable issues walking through our doors every week:

  • Dogs with preventable separation anxiety.
  • Owners stressed by conflicting nutrition advice.
  • Puppies who were never taught how to settle.

We realized that while we can only board a few dogs at a time, we can teach thousands of owners how to build a better life for their pets. Vekaan is our way of scaling our care beyond the walls of our motel.

Meet the Team

Founders & Head Handlers

We both grew up surrounded by animals—muddy paws and wagging tails were simply part of our childhoods. That deep connection evolved into a calling. To ensure we offered more than just cuddles, we completed specialized training in Animal Psychology with a focus on dog behavior.

This specialized background, combined with years of daily “field work” in the motel, gives us a unique perspective. We don’t just see a “bad dog”; we see the anxiety, the boredom, or the dietary imbalance driving the behavior.

In Memory of Ludwig (2012–2024)

The Hundemotel—and by extension, this site—would not exist without Ludwig. He was the inspiration for our journey to create a more social, joyful life for dogs. We lost him in March 2024, but his spirit guides every decision we make. Every article on safety, every review on comfort, is written with the standard: “Would this be good enough for Ludwig?”

Our Philosophy

Vekaan is built on three non-negotiable pillars:

  1. Science & Psychology First: We don’t use fear or pain. We use psychology, patience, management, and understanding to change behavior.
  2. Ethical & Mindful Living: We believe in sustainable, high-quality choices. From the food in the bowl to the beds they sleep on, we prioritize health and ethics (including plant-based and sustainable options).
  3. Total Transparency: If a product is bad, we will tell you. If a training method is outdated, we will debunk it. You can trust us because our reputation is built on the health of the dogs in our actual care.
